Newly formed practice wins top award- incorporating the Conservation Rooflight

A residential property incorporating Conservation Rooflights as part of its design, has won a coveted Town and County Design Award sponsored by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Peter King of The Carden King Partnership, was presented with the award by the Presenter of Channel 4s Grand Designs, Kevin McCloud, at a special ceremony at the National Trust estate of Stourbridge on 26 June. The project, an extension to a listed property won the Alterations and Extensions Category (RIBA Wessex Region) for the partnership.

The extension is to the south elevation of a long, single room wide 17th century cottage overlooking open countryside. It features a 4m high bay window with a galleried (cut back) floor behind to increase light penetration. The Conservation Rooflights endow the gallery with important additional light, as it is used as a study area. A pool directly in front of the window casts ever-changing reflections into the room which, particularly at midday , are spectacular.

The judges said of the project This extremely well detailed and sensitive alteration just goes to show that small can be beautiful. We were impressed by the integration of the old and the new, and the scale and balance of the extension.

Peter King, also chairman of The Rooflight Company set up the practice with David Carden, an interior designer less than a year ago, and commented: We are very encouraged to receive an award so early in the life of our practice. The project was an opportunity to open up the end of this building to provide light and air. The design, whilst in keeping with the surrounding Cotswold village, is highly unusual on a building of this age and type.
